Have you heard this question before, what is your why?  At first I thought it was silly, why did I have to answer this?  I knew why I was an artist deep down in my soul, so why was it necessary to be able to write about it?

Then this year I was asked to expand upon it some.  Then I began to have discussions with my students in the classes I was teaching. We covered a lot of topics, and last month I expanded upon my goals as an artist, essentially covering the “why”.

Then the importance of answering this question came to me. It to have the overarching goal and focus to your work. So no matter what subject you choose to turn into a piece of art, it still falls within the purview of what you’re striving to convey as an artist.

Ask yourself what your “why” is. You might really like the answer and then find a certain level of freedom in your creative practice in the coming year.

My why is the desire to share joy, serenity, and the sense of optimism beauty adds to our lives.  As an artist, my goal is to add as much beauty into the world as possible.  Sharing with as many as I can.
